Earth is said to be started many million years back. From its existence it passed many eras and underwent enormous natural and man-made circumstances. Time to time floods, droughts, earthquakes, earth slips, and volcano eruptions occurred on this planet irrespective of the era or the region. But countries like Sri Lanka are in a way luckier since it does not possess natural disaster creators such as volcanoes, yet it is liable to any other disaster of the nature at any moment. No country is truly lucky to be safe enough from disasters.
Today, words like global warming, floods, droughts are in the mouths of people more than ever in the history. Africa is starving without food. It is said that U.S.A. could feed the whole Africa with the amount of wheat flour they destroy each year and with what they spend on organic fuel. “Is the world running towards its end? Will it really be over by year 2012 or is it just a rumor since Mayan’s calendar does not go beyond 2012?” No scientist possesses a definite answer for any of these questions, some say this is going to be the end of the world, some say no. We could categorize them as optimistic scientists and pessimistic scientists. In this case who say ‘yes’ to the end by 2012 would be pessimists and who say ‘no’ would be the optimists.
Being optimistic for a moment let us assume that the world will not end in year 2012. Let us try to think how the world would be like in 2100 or the 22nd century depending on what is evident and forecasts of so called optimistic and pessimistic scientists. As per the socyberty.com
Pessimistic Scientists;
· The Earth’s population will probably be 22.2 billion!
· The Earth’s temperature will be 1.4 to 5.8 °C higher than it is today.
· The ice at the North and South Pole will melt and the sea level will rise by 9 to 88 cm. Cities at or below sea level will sink.
· Half of the Earth’s plants and animals will disappear along with the tropical rain forests.
· We will use up all the Earth’s natural resources. People won’t be able to survive on Earth, so they will have to find a new planet live on.
Optimistic Scientists;
· The law will oblige families to have no more than one child, and this will reduce the Earth’s population to two billion.
· People will use environmentally-friendly energy sources like the sun and the wind, which do not pollute the air, so the Earth’s temperature will not increase.
· Strict laws will protect animal and plant species from extinction.
· A population of two billion people will need fewer natural resources, so there will be enough food, water, etc. for everyone.
Here I am presenting the highest percentages of a questionnaire on Mr. Poll. 95% believe there would be humans alive on earth even by 2100. 26% being the highest percentage believe there would be between 10-20 billion populations by the 22nd century. 32% believe global warming would be the immediate concern of human beings by that era. Life is expected to be easier by 20% of voters. 36% percent of voters prefer to be born in 2150. A manned mission is expected to be the highest success of space technology achieving 70%. 80% of total voters believe that the internet would still be used but in a much different way.
Ultimately what I have to say is that nothing is predictable. I can’t say if the global warming would carry this world to its end or the global warming is itself a natural process as believed by some scientists. Yet my genuine wish is that this world would be more beautiful and safer by year 2100 and that every creature would be living ‘happily ever after’ including human beings.
